Thesis

In Henry's mind he thinks not of the consequences nor stands up for himself but stays back like a face in a crowd.

"As he looked the youth gripped his outcry at his throat. He saw that even if the men were tottering with fear they would laugh at his warning. They would jeer him, and, if practicable, pelt him with missiles. Admitting that he might be wrong, a frenzied declamation of the kind would turn him into a worm." (Crane 3) In this paragraph Henry thinks he must break from the ranks and harangue his comrades so they wont all be killed like pigs if he didn't warn them from the dangers, but as in this he thinks they will all just laugh at him and make fun of him, but if he should of told them about the dangers, because every little suggestion or warning could be a turning point in the war, but he only thought of the worse case scenario and remained silent.

"The youth achieved one little thought in the midst of this chaos. The composite monster which had caused the other troops to flee had not then appeared. He resolved to get a view of it, and then, he thought he might very likely run better than the best of them." (Crane 4) In this paragraph Henry is starting to get worried, as the regiment is fighting some of t he regiment starts to retreat and run back, and it gives Henry a sense of thought that it is ok to run, which isn't totally his fault, but he is in a mix of weather to run or weather to stay and fight, and feels that it is ok to run, but doesn't think about how much he is hurting his regiment and fighting back.

"He had fled, he told himself, because annihilation approached. He had done a good part in saving himself, who was a little piece of the army. He had considered the time, he said, to be one in which is was the duty of every little piece to rescue itself if possible." (crane 7) In this paragraph Henry deciedes to run, thinking of saving only himself and being self centered, Henry does the wrong thing and thinking that he didn't mean much to the regiment or even the army, but everyone really matters in the war, one person could change it all, but instead of fighting he decides to take the wrong road and flees, also hoping that the regiment would be happy because he would still be alive, which they would but also discourage him for running.

chapter 8

Henry hears the sounds of the battle and goes to check things out, when he goes closer he sees the wounded soldiers walking on the road. an injured soldier starts talking about how they had a lot of courage and asks henry what his injury is but henry ran away.

this chapter was sort of interesting, it had a lot to do about what henry was thinking, and i think the injured soldier will give henry less hope for survival.

What made henry run toward the war?

chapter 14

It is dawn, he felt as he was sleeping for a thousand years. Henry finds out that wilson is a sensitive man, they talk about the battle and henry says that jim is dead, wilson goes and breaks up a fight and tells henry that yesterday over half to the regiment was lost.

I think henry felt bad because of the soldiers that went into the woods.

What made wilson so sensitive?

Chapter 15

Henry remembers the yellow envelope, henry was going to ask him about it the next day thinking it will help him from being caught, he thinks that he is invisible and wont die, he thinks the people that ran are not as good as him. wilson asks for his envelope back and gets embarrassed. Henry then thinks about all the stories he will tell his mom from war.

Henry is getting a little cocky and thinks he is invisible and needs to straighten up.

Why was wilson embarrassed?

Chapter 16

Soldiers go into trenches, while shooting henry spots some of the troops and his regiment is taken into the forest, henry starts to blame others for not having a good regiment. they are told they will fight soon and get ready for battle.

This chapter is sort of a climax to the fight.

How will the fight go?

Chapter 17

After waiting, the enemy came upon a blue group, henry fights hard and doesn't retreat. He thinks about nothing but killing the enemy, at the end he hears someone laughing, then shooting in the air from victory. henry believes that he didn't do anything for bravery, the soldiers congradulate each other.

Henry proved himself to the other soldiers, he is very brave.

Why did henry stay and fight.

Chapter 18

In the beginning the troops are resting. Later on the troops hear a noise and its Jimmie in pain wilson thinks there is a stream and goes to check it out. They see the blue troops and a general, as the general walks by they hear the general talking about which unit they don't need.
They say the dont need the 304th unit which henry is in and that they don't fight well enough.

I believe their is hate and betrayal in this chapter because they have no faith in the 304th.

why would the genral say something like that

Chapter 19

Henry feels guilty about not being a good fighter. They are scared because they are told they going to die. They head back to camp and organize into a formation. the keep info to themselves when they are a bout to charge. henry notices the flag in front of him and follows it. The soldier gets shot with the flag and henry picks it up.

Henry has changed now, and is becoming more of a man.

Why would they go into battle knowing they have a chance of dieing.

chapter 23

the colonel comes running back sayin we half to charge em!
Before they charged Henry tried to motivate them.
Nearing the end of battle they won with the flag.
They decide to lay in the grass and jubilant and glorified come over to congratulate Henry.

What would of happened if they didnt charge them.
Why did Henry motivate them.

Chapter 22

The praise helped henry in his next battle.
as he fights his regiment thins.
he wanted to prove that he wasn't mud dog and was a man.
They keep fighting and their regiment still weakens.
i thought the chapter was intense, lots of fighting action
Why don't they get backup?
Why don't they find a new place to attack?

Chapter 21

The regiment returns. Happy about winning with odds against them.
Some of the soldiers made fun of them and the mud diggers.
News from the colonel that Henry and wilson were some of the best fighters.
thought the chapter was warming knowing they won.
why did the soldiers make fun of them.
why would the leader call them mud dogs.

why did the youth not want to stay with him.

chapter 9

henry goes back to avoid all the injured men, henry got jealous of the injured soldiers, jim gets shot and jim was afraid he'd get ran over by the wagon, henry tried to lead jim toward the feilds but jim shortly after collapses and dies. Henry thought the others were dumb for not running and i thought that henry running was him running away from being killed or death.

Why would henry be roaming around alone during the war?

Chapter 6

henry is this chapter is happy and relaxed, henry is walking around talkin to people and shaking their hands, then all of a sudden the enemy comes back, henry and some of the others are running back, the come to the rifleman and tell them that they are comming and they stop he charge.

Chapter 1

The story takes place during the Civil War about a boy named Henry washing his clothes in the river and notices that the army was moving. So that following day Henry tells his mother that he wants to join the army, his mother tells him no but he decides to join, after joining he tells his mother and finally gives in telling him ok and to be a good boy. Along the way he meets Jim, a rather tall man, a youth, and a loud voiced man which his name is not known yet. When at camp Jim, youth, and the loud voiced man talked about weather they would fight or run and Jim said if people would fight, then he would fight.

I thought that henry's mother could have made more of an attempt to stop henry but did the right thing and let him go.

Questions: why hasn't the youth or the loud man have greeted themselves and said their names...
